Capacity and recovery
Describe your busiest hot-water period, including showers, laundry, and dishwashing. Tank capacity and recovery both affect how the system handles demand.
A NEW HEATER. AN INFORMED CHOICE.
Replacing a tank water heater starts with the condition of the old system, your household’s hot-water needs, and what the installation space can support.

WHEN REPLACEMENT MAKES SENSE
No hot water alone does not establish that the heater needs replacement. An evaluation should distinguish a component problem from a failing tank.
Read about water heater repair ↗Water escaping the tank itself calls for a different discussion from a leaking fitting. Ask where the water originates and what that means for the unit.
Share previous repairs, visible corrosion, and changes in performance. Consider the system’s overall condition alongside any proposed repair.
Additional occupants, fixtures, or overlapping use may change the capacity and recovery you need. Replacing with the same model size is not always the best match.
BEFORE EQUIPMENT IS CHOSEN
Describe your busiest hot-water period, including showers, laundry, and dishwashing. Tank capacity and recovery both affect how the system handles demand.
Discuss the existing fuel type, available clearances, water connections, and venting or electrical needs. Leave compatibility checks to the installer.
Ask what removal, installation, startup, inspection, and maintenance information are included. Confirm equipment details and any written terms directly before authorizing work.
CORONA & CALIFORNIA REQUIREMENTS
The California Seismic Safety Commission states that new and replacement water heaters must be anchored or strapped to resist falling in an earthquake. Have the applicable bracing requirements addressed as part of the installation discussion.
Read the state’s water heater bracing guidance (opens in a new tab)
The City of Corona’s directory includes plumbing permits. Ask the Building Division about your specific installation, including any required permit or inspection, before work starts. Confirm who will handle the applicable steps; do not assume they are included.

Water heaters involve hot water, pressure, and gas or electrical systems. Replacement is not a simple homeowner disconnect-and-reconnect task.
INSTALLATION QUESTIONS
Have the approximate tank size, fuel type, and a description of the installation location ready.
A confirmed leak through the tank body is different from a repairable connection leak. Have the source identified before choosing equipment. Moisture near a heater can also come from nearby piping or condensation.
The existing size is a starting point, not the whole decision. Discuss how many people use hot water, overlapping showers and appliances, recovery needs, and available space. A like-for-like replacement still needs an installation review.
Confirm the current requirements for your specific project with the City of Corona Building Division. The City lists plumbing permits, but a permit question should be resolved for the actual scope of work. This does not mean every repair requires a permit.
Compare peak demand, available fuel or electrical capacity, venting, placement, and maintenance. A tankless conversion involves more than removing a tank. See the tankless repair and installation guide.
